Upcoming Holidays in Taiwan: Changes for 2026
For both newcomers and residents, 2026 is unusual, though in different ways. While newcomers will face unfamiliar holidays, residents also have new holidays this year, as the government decreed new national holidays. Without further ado, I present 2026 holidays in Taiwan:
September 25th is the Mid-Autumn Festival, or Moon Festival, falling on the 15th day of the 8th month in the lunar calendar. Families celebrate both harvest and reunion with mooncakes, fruit, and barbecues. In 2026, it is a long weekend from Friday 25th as it coincides with…
… September 28th or Teacher’s Day. Teacher’s Day was recently re-introduced as a national holiday, falling on Confucius’ birthday. This year it is a Monday and is contiguous with both a weekend and Moon Festival. So there is a four-day holiday period.
October 10th is the country’s National Day. It’s also referred to as Double Ten Day and represents the founding of the Republic of China (ROC) as well. In 2026, it falls on a Saturday, so the previous day is marked as a make-up holiday. There are major parades, fireworks and celebrations island-wide.
October 25th is Retrocession Day in Taiwan and celebrates the return of Taiwan to the Republic of China in 1945. In 2026, after a period of abeyance, it was reintroduced and this year provides a long weekend as Monday is a make-up holiday.
And the last holiday of 2026 is December 25th. It’s not Christmas Day in Taiwan, it’s Constitution Day. It was reinstated as a national holiday. Publicly, ceremonies are more muted than others. It falls on a Friday, providing an additional long weekend, and the last holiday for 2026.
National holidays in Taiwan close government offices, banks, companies, etc. for one day or more depending on the holiday’s timing.
