Best Documentary: 2013

Its powerful message and stunning visuals resonated across the globe, earning accolades at major festivals including WorldFest Houston and FICMA Barcelona.
The film was showcased in special screenings across the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Germany, and Norway, and enjoyed theatrical releases in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan—bringing Taiwan’s breathtaking landscapes and environmental story to audiences worldwide.
With a production budget of US$3 million, Beyond Beauty remains the most expensive documentary ever made in Taiwan. Directed by Chi Po-lin, with legendary filmmaker Hou Hsiao-hsien as executive producer, the film features an evocative score by Ricky Ho, performed by the Prague Symphony Orchestra and Taiwanese vocalists Nolay Piho and Chen Yi-lai.
More than a documentary, Beyond Beauty is a cinematic poem, an aerial love letter to Taiwan that celebrates its natural wonders while urging reflection and renewal.
Who is the director, Chi Po-lin?
Chi Po-lin began his career in public service but found his calling as an aerial photographer, documenting Taiwan’s evolving landscapes and environmental challenges for over 25 years. After Typhoon Morakot’s devastation in 2009, he left government work to pursue filmmaking full-time, founding Taiwan Aerial Imaging and pioneering aerial cinematography in Taiwan.
His landmark documentary Beyond Beauty: Taiwan From Above (2013) brought national awareness to environmental issues and showcased Taiwan’s natural splendor. Tragically, Chi died in a helicopter crash in 2017 while filming. His legacy lives on through the Chi Po-lin Foundation, which continues his mission of environmental storytelling and education.
